5 Money-saving Driving Tips

Do you cut coupons and have them ready to go at in the checkout line? Do you have the Groupon app on your phone? What about a Costco membership? Everyone in Lexington wants to save money, right? Well, the team at Auto Excel is no exception. We’ve compiled a short list of some driving-related tips that will do exactly that.

1. Tires.

You don’t need to spend a ton of money on new tires unless that’s really what you want! But don’t buy the cheapest either thinking that you’re saving money, because, in the long run, that’s most likely not the case. Cheap tires are exactly that… cheap. They won’t last nearly as long as some more expensive, better quality tires. Even more importantly, cheap tires often don’t work as well and can take longer to stop. You definitely don’t want that! Safety first, people.

2.  Car Insurance

Shop around for car insurance. I know it’s a hassle and can be very time-consuming. Identify at least three different insurance companies, grab a beer or a nice Chardonnay, and sit in the most comfortable spot in your house. Get clear on the coverage you want so that you really are comparing apples to apples. This can save you hundreds of dollars a year. Just think of all the white wine that could get you!

3.  Be Conscious of Fuel Efficiency

Don’t drive like Mario Andretti or Danica Patrick. When you speed, slam on brakes, and quickly accelerate you use significantly more fuel. Also, don’t drive like a snail. 50-60 MPH is optimal for fuel efficiency. And don’t warm up your car too long or leave it running while waiting in line to pick up your prescription. These are simple ways to maximize your fuel efficiency.

4.  Credit Cards that Reward Filling Up

Use a cash-back credit card at the pumps. Make things work for you! Take a bit of time to research what card will give you the best deal, including the percentage of cash back, annual fees, and possible welcome bonuses.

5.  Maintenance

And finally, keep your vehicle properly maintained. It’s easy to let this one slide, but keeping your auto properly tuned up, having regular oil changes, and cleaning air filters are all ways to increase fuel efficiency and decrease the likelihood of a bigger, more expensive auto repair need.
